TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is a disorder where the joint connecting your upper and lower jaw is not working properly due to injury, stress or misalignment. This joint is responsible for the forward, backward and side-to-side movement of the lower jaw. If there are any problems with this joint, the condition is usually due to TMJ (also called TMD). You may be suffering from TMJ if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Locking or popping of the jaw when you open or close your mouth
  • Pain and pressure behind the eyes
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Earaches
  • Pain that occurs in your jaw while eating, yawning or opening your mouth
  • A change in how your upper and lower teeth fit together

If you think you may be suffering from TMJ, we recommend you contact us today to schedule an evaluation with us. Our dentist will review your symptoms with you and determine your treatment plan if necessary. Your treatment will vary depending on the severity of your condition; it can include simple lifestyle changes, jaw and facial relaxation exercises, a mouth or night guard or jaw surgery.
